Disable Facebook Ad Images

picture-3I don’t know about you, but I get tired of having all those picture ads show up in my facebook sidebar.  The new facebook has changed their setup for ads so even if you’ve blocked them before, they’ll be back!  Here’s how to get rid of the images, making the ads un-intrusive and text-based.  You’ll need Mozilla Firefox, so if you don’t use it I’d highly recommend converting.  You can download it here.

  1. In the toolbar of mozilla, click tools, then add-ons
  2. Click “Get Addons.”
  3. Type in “Adblock Plus” into the search bar and press enter.
  4. Click the “Add to Firefox” (or install) button next to Adblock Plus.  You will be asked to restart firefox.
  5. Adblock will ask what what filter it should use to identify ads.  Select “easyList USA” and click subscribe.

That’s it!  Load up facebook again and you’ll find that all the ads are hidden.  If that Adblock plus icon on the toolbar bugs you, you can hide it.  Just open up Adblock preferences, click options, and disable the toolbar icon.  Feel free to email me with any questions, and have a marvelous, less ad-ridden day.

PS Remember that the images down the right side of your home page aren’t ads (they are highlights of your friends’ group and event activity), and will not be disabled by this fix.

  6. Try Firefox for a day or two–I think you’ll find it’s a lot better than you think. And yes, this solution works on Vista, as long as you try Firefox :)
