I Saw a Skyscraper Today. That’s Awesome.

June 10th, 2009

babyLet me tell you a story.  A long time ago, you were a baby.  You sat there, looked around, grinned (but didn’t know why), and drooled on whatever object happened to be placed in your inch-long hands.  You didn’t care about possessions.  You didn’t know about the worries of the world.  You loved grinning and drooling.  And away you drooled.

biggest-flat-screenSomething changed since then… somewhere along the way, we all learned to be really bad at just loving the present.  We weren’t satisfied with drool anymore, we wanted a new MacBook.  We weren’t happy with figuring out noises we could make while blowing spit bubbles, we wanted a flat screen TV.

staring-between-a-poleI don’t know why it is, but for some reason the human mind is terrible at just enjoying what we’ve got.  Have you ever noticed that if someone you’re interested isn’t interested in you, you see nothing but their good qualities?  We just sit there and fret about those good qualities that we wish were part of our life.  Then it finally works out… and bam!  You’re wondering how committed you are because you suddenly see their flaws, wondering if you could find someone better.  The best part… if they decide to break up with you, you’ll only see their good side again.  Good job brain.

happy-elephant-01Anyway, here’s the thought of the day–holy crap, humanity!  Just have fun with today!  Enjoy it how it is.  Sure there’s stuff missing.  But you know what?  You’ve got carpeted floors.  You know how to spell.  Your favorite song played on your iPod today.  You have a magic metal device that can transport you hundreds of miles when you lean your foot forward slightly.  Your favorite T-shirt is still hanging in there.  You’ve got a lot of people who love you even if you screw up.  You have a brain that totally makes that mosquito buzzing around in your apartment look like an idiot.

kid_swim1And best of all, even with all your flaws that you know so well, you’re a pretty good person.  So hey, give yourself a pat on the back, put down your to do list, walk to the pool and put your feet in.  Splash that noisy little kid with the paddle board and the googles too big for his head.  Then just enjoy a bit of the present without letting the future whine at you.

Life is awesome.
